Indian Licence Conversion Parramatta — 2026 Guide
If you hold an Indian licence and received your PR in NSW, you have 3 months to convert — or you are driving illegally. Service NSW Parramatta is a 5-minute walk from the station. Right now, every slot in the system is full.
What the 2026 Austroads Reforms Changed for Indian Drivers
If you live in Parramatta with an Indian licence and you became a permanent resident in NSW, your 3-month conversion window started the day your visa was granted — not the day you learned about the rule. The 2026 Austroads reforms removed India's direct conversion exemption entirely. You now need both a Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) and a full practical driving test at Service NSW before you can legally drive as a PR holder.
For rideshare and taxi drivers in Parramatta, this is not a bureaucratic inconvenience — it is an income emergency. Uber and DiDi deactivate accounts of unlicensed drivers. For corporate workers at ANZ, Westpac, and NSW Government Parramatta offices, your employer may require driving for your role, and your PR clock is ticking regardless of whether you currently drive.
The one advantage Parramatta has over every other Sydney suburb: Service NSW Parramatta at 27-31 Argyle Street is a 5-minute walk from Parramatta Station — the most conveniently located test centre in Sydney for the overseas licence conversion process. Use that proximity. Book now, before the window closes.
From the date your permanent visa was granted, you have 3 months to convert your overseas licence in NSW. After that: $603 first-offence fine, insurance voided, vehicle impoundment, and if you fail your practical test your overseas driving privileges are permanently withdrawn.

What the 2026 Austroads Reforms Changed for Indian Drivers
Until 31 January 2026, Indian licence holders converting in NSW were classified as 'List B' — meaning they needed to pass the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) but were exempt from the practical driving test. That exemption was removed under the national 2026 Austroads reforms that came into effect on 1 February 2026.
Indian drivers converting in NSW now require: the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) — 45 questions, 90% pass mark; the Hazard Perception Test (HPT) — video-based hazard recognition; and a full practical driving test on NSW roads with a Service NSW assessor. If you fail the practical test, your overseas driving privileges are permanently withdrawn — you must start as a NSW learner driver from scratch.
If you began your conversion process before 1 February 2026 and passed your DKT under the old rules, contact us immediately — your situation may be different. Road To Citizenship confirms your exact status in the free assessment, based on your PR grant date and the date of any prior tests.
DKT, HPT and Practical — What Indian Drivers Need in NSW
Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) — 45 questions on NSW road rules, signs and intersection procedures. Pass mark is 90% (41 correct). Computer-based at Service NSW. $57 per in-person attempt, or one fee for unlimited online attempts. Study from the NSW Road Users Handbook only — do not use generic national guides, which do not reflect NSW-specific content.
Hazard Perception Test (HPT) — 28 video clips assessing hazard identification speed and accuracy. $57 per attempt. This catches many overseas drivers who pass the DKT easily but underestimate the HPT. Road To Citizenship includes HPT-specific coaching in our preparation package.
Practical Driving Test — approximately 30 minutes on NSW roads. $82 per attempt. The Parramatta test uses Victoria Road, Harris Street, Windsor Road, Great Western Highway and surrounding streets. The number one fail reason at Parramatta is head checks — Australian examiners require a clearly visible, exaggerated head turn before every lane change. Mirror checks alone are an automatic fail. Indian drivers trained on mirrors must recalibrate this habit before the test.
If your Indian licence is not in English, or your name on the licence does not exactly match your passport, a NAATI-certified translation is required. We check this in your document audit. Most post-2012 bilingual Indian smart card licences are accepted without NAATI translation at Parramatta.
Overseas licence holders go directly to DKT → HPT → Practical test. No 120-hour logbook. NSW Government confirmed. Total government fees: $57 + $57 + $82 = $196 minimum.

Road To Citizenship coaches you on the exact Parramatta routes before your test.
Distance from nearby suburbs: Service NSW Parramatta at 27-31 Argyle Street is 6 minutes walk from Wigram Street Harris Park, and 2.1km from Westmead Station — making it the closest major test centre to Harris Park and Westmead. No other suburban test centre in Sydney is this accessible.

Why Parramatta's Indian Community Comes to Road To Citizenship
What We Guarantee
One of our clients — a rideshare driver who had been working in Parramatta since arriving from Gujarat — came to us 11 weeks into his 3-month PR window. He had no idea the deadline existed. He had been asking colleagues and nobody in his network knew either. We assessed his situation the same afternoon, booked his DKT for the following week, and had him through the full process — DKT, HPT, and practical at Parramatta — within 3 weeks. He passed his practical on the first attempt. He is still driving today. The Parramatta Indian community is one of the most professionally networked in Sydney — but the 3-month licence deadline is genuinely not well known, even among long-term residents. If you found this page, you are ahead of most.
Want to speak to a past client from your community before you decide? Message us on WhatsApp and we'll connect you within 24 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Planning for Australian Citizenship?
Most of our Parramatta clients come back to us 2–3 years after getting licensed when they are ready for citizenship. If you are on a pathway to permanent residency, the 4-year physical presence clock for citizenship eligibility is already running. The citizenship application process has its own DHA requirements — and self-lodgement errors cause 12-month silent delays with no notification.
