The Chinese Community in Sydney — Driving and Work Context

Deadline coming up? Free assessment before slots fill.

China (People's Republic of China) is non-recognised under Austroads. Chinese licence holders in NSW must sit both the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) AND a practical driving test — no direct conversion pathway exists.

Important: Chinese driving licences (中国驾驶证) are printed in Mandarin only. A NAATI-accredited Mandarin-to-English translation is mandatory before Service NSW will process your conversion. This is an additional step that English-language licence holders do not face.

Employment profile requiring an Australian licence: IT workers commuting to North Shore and CBD roles, property and finance professionals, restaurant and hospitality workers in Eastwood and Hurstville, delivery drivers (Uber Eats, DoorDash), and construction tradespeople in western Sydney.

⚠ NAATI Translation Mandatory

Chinese driving licences are printed in Mandarin only. They are not in English. Every Australian state and territory requires a NAATI-accredited Mandarin-to-English translation before processing your licence conversion. This is an additional step that English-language licence holders do not face. Budget $80–$120 and allow 3–5 business days for the translation.

Class C · Car Licence · NAATI Translation

Converting Your Chinese Licence to an Australian Licence

Step 1 — NAATI Mandarin Translation

  • Obtain a NAATI-accredited Mandarin-to-English translation of your Chinese driving licence before attending Service NSW
  • Cost: approximately $80–$120 — verify current rates
  • Find NAATI translators at naati.com.au — search "Mandarin" in NSW
  • Mandarin translators are concentrated in Eastwood, Burwood, Hurstville, and Chatswood
  • Allow 3–5 business days for the translation

Step 2 — Driver Knowledge Test (DKT)

  • Where: Service NSW Centre. Nearest to Hurstville: Hurstville Service NSW — verify address. Nearest to Eastwood and Burwood: Parramatta or Auburn Service NSW. Nearest to Chatswood: verify nearest Service NSW.
  • Study: NSW Road Users' Handbook — English only. No official Mandarin version.
  • Cost: approximately $46 — verify at service.nsw.gov.au. Pass mark: 45/50.

Step 3 — Practical Driving Test

  • Where: Hurstville/Kogarah Service NSW area or Parramatta/Auburn. Verify current test centre locations.
  • Cost: approximately $129 — verify. Current wait: 4–8 weeks in Sydney.
✓ Full Licence on Conversion

If your Chinese licence was a full unrestricted licence, you receive a full NSW licence — not P plates. Chinese licences must be surrendered at Service NSW on conversion day. Note: a Chinese driving licence is a small laminated card approximately credit card size — Service NSW officers in Sydney are familiar with this format.

Mandarin-speaking driving instructors are available in Eastwood, Hurstville, Burwood, and Chatswood. Research and verify specific schools before booking — this is an important differentiator for many Chinese community members who prefer to learn with Mandarin-speaking instructors.
HR · HC · Forklift Licences

Heavy Vehicle and Forklift Licences — Sydney

HR and HC licences are less prominent in Sydney's Chinese community than for Indian or Filipino communities — fewer Chinese Sydney residents work in heavy transport. However they are relevant for Chinese-owned construction and earthmoving businesses in western Sydney, Chinese workers in waste management, and food manufacturing and refrigerated transport.

Same national requirements: hold Class C Australian for 2 years, knowledge test, practical assessment with RTO, medical declaration. Payless Truck Driving School in Kogarah is conveniently located near the Hurstville Chinese community hub. Verify current availability and pricing directly.

Forklift · HRWL · Warehousing

Forklift Licence (HRWL Class LF) — Sydney

Deadline coming up? Free assessment before slots fill.

The forklift HRWL is more relevant than HR/HC for Sydney's Chinese community. Chinese-background workers are well-represented at Sydney Markets (Flemington), Eastern Creek and Minchinbury DCs, Botany Bay port logistics, and Chinese-owned importing businesses.

  • Training: TLILIC0003 — 2 days training + 1 day assessment
  • Applied via: SafeWork NSW through MyService NSW — submit within 60 days of assessment
  • Cost: approximately $379–$400 — verify with provider

RTOs near Chinese community hubs: DLI Training (Auburn NSW, 100 Parramatta Road — accessible from Burwood and Strathfield via Parramatta Road, RTO 800483); SafeZone Training (Smithfield NSW, close to western Sydney). Verify if any RTOs operate closer to Hurstville or Chatswood.
